WiP Episode 2

Posted by WIP Podcast On March - 18 - 2009

Hey all,

Episode two is up for your podcast consumption!  We covered a lot of topics in this one; Squarespace–an awesome WYSIWYG website editor that Ania, Pete and I are transitioning our sites over to, the ongoing Painter vs Photoshop debate, transitioning to full time with our guest Steve Belledin.

Good times had by all.

Next ep will probably be recorded at Reverie in Dallas, which Pete and I will both be attending, so keep an eye out for that one in early April.

In the meantime, as always we want your feedback! Email us at wippodcast@gmail.com with questions and comments.  If you emailed us before and didn’t hear your question, we’ll get back to you in one way or another.

By the way–the episode is now in MP3 format by popular demand

Show notes after the jump!

Art Scene: What’s going on in the art community.  Contests, publications, events, etc.

10kHMalcolm Gladwell has hypothesized that it takes 10,000 hours to “master” anything. this idea applies to anyone from a master heart surgeon to a master lumberjack. We’ll open the show talking about how much time we’ve spent practicing, what we’ve been doing to improve and events/tutorials that we have been participating in.

Jeff: I recently finished an illustration that was being kind of a pain in my ass.  Something I continuously forget is that the more I prepare with reference and thumbnails the less roadblocks I’ll hit later on. Usually I’ll seek out feedback from forums, though sometimes that runs into conflicts with NDA’s. Caroline’s a great source for feedback because she knows my capabilities and shortcomings. Taking breaks also helps.  The more frustrated I get the less objectively I can look at a painting.  I’ll end up spinning my wheels for a while until I’m able to tear myself away. Cutting distractions helps too.

Pete and Ania were getting married all month, but have been doing a bunch of weeklies over at Conceptart.org

The TopicAn interview with a guest about their thoughts on various topics form style, education, networking or whatever is relevant to them. This lets an expert really talk about the big issues rather than us schmoes.

Our guest this ep is Steve Belledin, who’s worked for WotC, Upperdeck, AEG and more.  He took Best in Show during the Gencon 2008 artshow, and he talks about his experiences getting into full-time illustration and putting together a portfolio that’ll fly in the current fantasy illustration market.

Pictures in music: The last topic of the show gives us a little time to talk about what music we’re listening to while we work.

Jeff: Mellowdrone
Pete: pending
Ania: pending

  1. Sweet, I’m excited to listen to the new episode! I’ll check it out tomorrow while I work. :)

Man, I’m so envious of you guys, getting to go to Reverie! Revelations last year was amazing.

  2. AMAZING SHOW! Very inspirational and encouraging. I worked while listening and loved every minute!

  3. I thought it was interesting to hear your thoughts on Painter vs. Photoshop. I actually started out with Photoshop in 2000 or 2001, without all that much experience with real paints. I’d done some acrylic work, but still have never worked in oils. From 2003 to 2005, I had a long-running battle with Painter. I would mess around with it for a while, get frustrated, and not touch it for months. Finally, though, after getting a tutorial from Todd Lockwood, and looking at some other tutorials, I started to get the hang of the program. Now I love Painter and sometimes have trouble with Photoshop! Just wanted to add my two cents. :)

I really enjoyed the interview; it answered a lot of my questions about working in the DnD/CCG business, and how to build a portfolio for those art directors.

    Awesome episodes. Thanks guys! :D

  4. Great work, yet again; really interesting interview. It felt as though there was lots of relevant information to artists aspiring to get into freelance, but who don’t really know about the more ‘personal mechanics’ of it all (if that makes any sense).

You guys have a fan here!

Hey gang, I’ve been looking forward to this!

Just a heads up though, I have subscribed to your podcast on itunes, but it is having error trying to download it, so I dont know if I’m the only on with this problem.

Anyhow, looking forward to finally listen to this!

  6. zelas says:

PS: even the download link nor the player on this site is working. Maybe its because of squarespace?

  8. And already I find this site to be among the podcast sites which I check regularly for new episodes, haha. I quite enjoy listening to it, especially while I paint I often have podcasts running. So far WIP has been pretty entertaining, informative and with interesting guests.
Am looking forward to new episodes :D

  9. H Nilsen says:

I just finished listening to the 2nd episode and I must say I can’t wait for the next episode.
It is just so usefull to listen to for someone who wishes to get into the industry.
And I want to congratulate on the wedding! A little late, but it’s the thought that counts =)

  10. Hello W.I.P. Crew and fellow listeners.

Thanks for providing entertaining and educational content that is focused on valuable information for aspiring illustrators. I enjoyed your first 2 podcasts, and I look forward to the 3rd.

I think stories of people who have a day job that begins to interfere with freelance work is really interesting. I love hearing people’s experiences with that scenario and how they have handled it.

On the tax subject, I just did some Google searching on “self employment taxes” and this seemed to be a simple enough beginner explanation to at least help you form more informed questions for a professional.

Just on note on the Illustration Master Class $1800 pricetag. It includes room and board for the week. The room is in a dorm – very nice, btw. And the board is an all-u-can-eat cafeteria with vegetarian/healthy options and pretty good quality.
You show up with your art supplies and you’re needs are met unlike other things where you have to scramble to get room and figure out your own sources of nutrition.
Plus, the class size was about 70 this year and we have access to the the faculty 12-18 hours a day as they work in the studios painting with us and looking at our pieces as we work.
The Greg Manchess/Scott Fischer duo are legendary for their pairing up together to make their rounds.
Julie Bell will take the time to explain exactly how she does her painting to you, individually.
We all have stories of one-to-one encounters.
This is true interaction not just classes and lectures.
I went the first year it was held in 2008, this year and I plan to go next year, too.
If you want more info, let me know.
    It is life-changing.

  12. admin says:

@M.C. Matz: yeah we totally changed our tune on that! In fact the episode I’m about to post has an interview with Marc Scheff about his experience at the IMC, and by the end we’re all in agreement that we need to start saving to go next year…

  13. Travis Neal says:

Hi guys! It was great to see you all at GenCon this year..

Just going through the old podcasts catching myself up. This service you are providing is priceless- thank you so much. I have absorbed a lot in the past few days and looking forward to more.

By the way, I can’t believe Pete is a CLUTCH fan! I’ve been listening to them for years- they are the best!
